David Bowie was immediately taken with the Beverly Hills Hotel and told Mick Rock that he'd like to take up residency there. Soon after they arrived, they began a photo shoot as a test shoot for The Jean Genie video they were preparing to film in the coming days. Mick said that the mood as a kind of "Hollywood street rat”.

“It’s got everything I want!” That’s what David Bowie said of The Beverly Hills Hotel. Bowie once told Mick Rock, that he’d love to take up a residency there. In 1972, amid the Ziggy Stardust madness. Mick and David spent eight nights there, taking pictures around the bungalow gardens.

"The jacket had just been flown in from New York for ‘The Jean Genie’ video. We immediately snuck off together to take some pictures with it. The whole place was so photogenic.” Mick said.

Bowie was in the middle of the Ziggy Stardust US tour and played a now infamous show at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. That show was recorded and later released as Santa Monica ’72. while in Los Angeles. After this stay, They went North to San Francisco where Bowie played a show at the Winterland Ballroom and recorded The legendary "Jean Genie “ music video that Mick directed.
